about

Sing to Survive was recorded over 3 days in December of 2009 in San Francisco at the legendary Tiny Telephone. Instead of traveling all the way to Nashville like they did for their first record, this time the band had the luxury of recording in their home city. Scott McDowell engineered the recording and the band was thrilled to have the opportunity to record at an analog studio using 2" tape. The sound of the band has evolved and has been described as a lot less rooster and a lot more crow this time around.

Track Name: Too Late
Your heart is painted raven black
and the crows have made their attack
I lost you when you started to crack
The stars by your eye remind me your age
and how you barely avoided the cage
when all you wanted was a turn of the page

But it’s too late you’ll have to learn to live with yourself
and you’re not getting any help
Ain’t it lonely sitting up at the top of your tree
while the rest of us are roaming free

Your lips are painted cherry red
like the blood that once ran through your head
and the puddles that circle the dead
You killed what you made and put it to rest
just to find some bigger nest
worth more than the beat of your chest

But it’s too late you’ll have to learn to live with yourself
snd you’re not getting any help
Ain’t it lonely sitting up at the top of your tree
ehile the rest of us are roaming free

And when you sleep you don’t dream
It must be far worse than it seems

Your teeth are painted paper white
and they glow when you turn out the light
but they rot right through the night
You smile so big and hide your mistakes
but everyone can see through your fake
you pray the Lord your soul to take

But it’s too late you’ll have to learn to live with yourself
and you’re not getting any help
Ain’t it lonely sitting up at the top of your tree
while the rest of us are roaming free
Track Name: No Worries
I got my head on straight and it's twisted tight
I got my boots on my feet and I'm ready to fight
well I don't know what's coming but I can wait
I got my fresh ironed pants and my big city tie
I got my mind on romance and some good country pie
well I ain't worried bout nothing coming my way
I got a tap in my step and a wiggle in my walk
I got a whole in my rep but I ain't one to talk
the only thing I'm thinking about's today

I don't know which way the wind's gonna blow but I ain't gonna worry about that now
Yeah I will get stuck in the cold and other times I will be up against the wall
Lord knows if I'll have somewhere to go but that don't seem to bother me at all

I got a dollar to my name and it’s about to be spent
I got a friend that’s a pain but he helps with the rent
well I don't know what's coming but I can wait

I got one or the other and a whole lotta choice
I got a concerned mother and a scratch in my voice
well I ain't worried about nothing coming my way
I got a tear in my eye and a pinch in my laugh
I don't need to decide or accomplish no task
the only thing I'm thinking about's today

I don't know which way the wind's gonna blow but I ain't gonna worry about that now
Yeah I will get stuck in the cold and other times I will be up against the wall
Lord knows if I'll have somewhere to go but that don't seem to bother me at all

With all these things around me they're bound to pass me by
but I'll be fine without them I'll gladly wave goodbye

I don't know which way the wind's gonna blow but I ain't gonna worry about that now
Yeah I will get stuck in the cold and other times I will be up against the wall
Lord knows if I'll have somewhere to go but that don't seem to bother me at all
Track Name: If I Miss the Last Train
Well some nights I get carried away
and forget all about my next day
Cause time is short and nights go fast
that’s why I’m always trying to make them last
If I miss the last train baby
If I miss the last train baby
If I miss the last train baby
don’t wait up on me

Well I know it comes as no surprise
When I speak the truth it's in my eyes
and lying awake's just a waste of my time
If you're out and about you’re closer to find
If I miss the last train baby
If I miss the last train baby
If I miss the last train baby
don’t wait up on me

Salvation comes to those who search
and I ain't settled with what comes first
cause I'll keep doing just whatever it takes
and if I sleep tonight I might never wake
If I miss the last train baby
If I miss the last train baby
If I miss the last train baby
don’t wait up on me
Track Name: Full Cup Blues
Why don't we take some time, why don't we cross that line
Cause I been sick and I'm tired of pretending to talk to you
There's a whole lot at stake, tell me what's it gonna take to get through
Everything moves so slow why nobody seems to know
This town hasn't changed and it sure ain't about to start
but I been wandering around always hearing the sound of my heart and it sounds something like this

I gotta lay it on thick
Something that's gonna stick
and that's part of the trick
Cause I'm sick of the full cup blues

Somebody lost the key, and finding one don't come cheap
and all the empty spaces and places are all used up
Well that's how it seems, that’s why I still keep my dreams in a cup
One of these days I'll spill and people gonna want their fill
so tip me over honey and pour me out
Cause I been stuck in my head but now I'm gonna spread it around and I'll do it just like this

I gotta lay it on thick
Something that's gonna stick
and that's part of the trick
Cause I'm sick of the full cup blues
It's gonna have to come quick
That’s just what makes me tick
It's gonna feel like a kick
Cause I'm sick of the full cup blues
Track Name: Not Alone
God only knows what it takes to move on
I’m not coming up with the steps to move on
I’ve been cooped up and it’s been so long
since I had the taste now the taste is gone
I don’t know whether I can go on
I said oh oh oh
I forget what it’s like to move on
Not finding none of the strength to move on
When I was younger man I would be gone
Now I can’t even get through this song
I don’t know whether I can go on
I said oh oh oh

Oh oh I’m on my own
Oh oh but I’m not alone

Can’t figure out a way to move on
Not even close to the space to move on
All by myself and it’s been so long
Since I had a friend who could tell me I’m wrong
I don’t know whether I could go on
I said oh oh oh
Looking for help or a push to move on
Keep on losing the will to move on
People are sick and they fade til they’re gone
Not even sure if that’s right or wrong
We need some help so we can go on
I said oh oh oh

Oh oh we’re on our own
Oh oh but we’re not alone

Pushing forever burdened together
You and I

People these days can barely move on
They got no room or no place to move on
Times they are tough and they’ve been for long
The world as we knew it is so far gone
God only knows whether we can go on
We say oh oh oh

Oh oh we’re on our own
Oh oh but we’re not alone
Oh oh keep holding on
Oh oh cause you’re not alone
Track Name: Try a Little Harder
Well you shiver every time that I touch you
just before you tell me to stop
As I attempt every inch of you
I lose you when you chemically drop
And I get mad at my heart rate
for never just staying the same
By this point you're already sleeping
boy some thing's never change
When you smile and you tell me you love me
I wish that that could be enough
but I can't quite believe you
since all you ever do is give up
Well try a little harder now baby
it seems the least you can do
If I only didn't have to ask you
and you would just know what to do

Well torture must be something you're good at
one of your many skills
But I don't really think I deserve it
though some might find it a thrill
But all I really want is to be average
that doesn't seem too much to ask
Then our life could be so much simpler
and we could even maybe last
Well I take a deep breath and I wonder
just how it all came to this
When small things got so much bigger
than something I could throw in a fit
Well I don't really know what to do with this
it sits right in the back of my mind
For you it's not even an issue
I guess that must be a sign
Track Name: Weather
When we were seventeen and we’d go running right through the trees
and we’d go get something good to eat I liked your reason
I’d meet your family and we’d sit down for a cup of tea
maybe we’d watch something on TV oh what a season
I’d sneak into your room by the light of the silvery moon
and we would lay in your bed and spoon night after night
I’d start to tell you too soon about the way I’d been feeling since June
I’d try to put it all in a tune but it was not quite right

We’d have to say goodbye and we’d go down to the river and cry
but we’d have much bigger fish to fry when we were older
We’d have a pretty good time but we were just two separate lines
then you’d get tangled up with mine when it grew colder
I was there when you heard the news and we had to throw away your old shoes
and we would never get over these blues but there was weather
When you only thought you’d lose and you had hidden away your fuse
I told you these things will come in twos and it got better

We’re on our own now with some more wrinkles in our brow
but we would never throw in the towel there ain’t no choice
I’ll watch you wear your crown and we may start feeling a little down
but we won’t ever forget the sound of our own voice
We will be on our way though it might be some other day
and we may have nothing left to say but we’ll keep talking
Though it won’t be the same and we’ll keep having our different names
sometimes we’ll get stuck out in the rain but we’ll keep walking
Track Name: No Outlet Blues
I'm a preacher without a church and I got nowhere to go
I'm a preacher without a church and I got nowhere to go
Well I ain't gonna quit preaching mama
but I'd like to be home
I'm a teacher without a class and it's been this way for long
I'm a teacher without a class and it's been this way for long
Well I swear you could learn something from me
but soon I will be gone
I'm a pitcher without a team and I'm always on my own
I'm a pitcher without a team and I'm always on my own
Well I gotta throw to somebody
I sure can't play ball alone

I'm a builder without tools and I got big ideas
I'm a builder without tools and I got big ideas
I got plans on my brain but
they been stuck there for years
I'm a fisher without a net and I can't go to work
I'm a fisher without a net and I can't go to work
And if I can't go fishing well
Lord knows I'll go berserk

I'm a painter without a brush and I got work to do
I'm a painter without a brush and I got work to do
I gotta paint the perfect picture
before my life is through
I'm a singer without a band and boy I need the help
I'm a singer without a band and boy I need the help
Cause I ain't much of a singer but
I sure can holler and yell
Track Name: Tired and True
Sometimes I can't stand what you do
And in my mind I'm tired of you
But my heart's always been true
And it will always beat for you

You know it's dark out when you look up at the stars
And it's been light's out and I've wondered where you are
But I'll light a candle for you when we're apart
And I'll curse the heavens for leading you so far

Well I know it's nothing new
For two of us and one of you
And one of me that's feeling blue
Cause half of me has gone with you

You know it's dark out when you look up at the stars
And it's been light's out and I've wondered where you are
But I'll light a candle for you when we're apart
And I'll curse the heavens for leading you so far

Don't know what's left for us to do
We can't go back to what we knew
When I fell in love you felt it too
But now we’ll look for something new

You know it's dark out when you look up at the stars
And it's been light's out and I've wondered where you are
But I'll light a candle for you when we're apart
And I'll curse the heavens for leading you so far

So my heart’s tired and true
But it will always beat for you
Yeah my heart will still be true
And it will always beat for you
Track Name: Keep Going
I don't want to just make it through
I don't want that when there's something about you
Keeps me going all the time
And I'm knowing that I got more places to climb
Where I'm headed I can't tell
I haven't said it but I got no reason to yell
Oh baby now you got it
There's just no living without it

And I believe in something coming my way
It's gonna take forever but it's gonna stay
And lead me in the morning til the end of the day

I ain't looking to make believe
Nothing's cooking when you got just what I need
But I won't be satisfied
Someone told me that there ain't no reason to try
But I'm working on getting close
Always searching for a way to make the most
Oh baby now let's go now
You know there's nothing before now

And I believe in something coming my way
It's gonna take forever but it's gonna stay
And lead me in the morning til the end of the day

I don't need no sympathy
When I feel low I just go and find some relief
Since my head is an open book
I ain't dead yet and there ain't no pills that I took
That's too easy that's been done
Yeah believe me there's a lot more places to run
Oh baby now keep going
You know you need to be showing
Keep going
Track Name: Here We Go
Moving on down and making our way to Tennessee
The highway’s a-flying and someone’s been looking at me
We hardly bother with words it’s the only thing that’s for sure
Well we’ll get there without ya with nothing about ya you’ll see
Got a trunk full of junk but it’s the kind of junk we’re gonna need
Enough to remind us of the last place behind us indeed
Oh you know it all depends on the things we got to lend
Well one thing I know is that we had to go and get free

Got a car full of ideas and a bag full of tears
Plenty of ears with nothing to fear
Got a list full of folks and our spirit’s half broke
Our body is soaked and it ain’t a joke
And nothing we learned gave us something to earn
But the people we heard gave plenty to serve
So here we go

My heart’s been pounding and it’s been sounding a little weak
We left without thinking but not without drinking last week
Even if it was too fast we knew we couldn’t last
Well it’s over and done with so we gotta have fun on our feet
The road is a diamond we'll go til we find him you'll see
A little funny I hear but it's clear we got no place to be
And maybe you just don't get it and you know we won't regret it
But the time has arrived so we gotta drive the country

Got a car full of ideas and a bag full of tears
Plenty of ears with nothing to fear
Got a list full of folks and our spirit’s half broke
Our body is soaked and it ain’t a joke
And nothing we learned gave us something to earn
But the people we heard gave plenty to serve
So here we go

Here's to you and yours all the way from New Orleans
It's not how you say it but to say it ain't nothing to mean
We got bug stains on our shirts and our feet are beginning to hurt
But one thing's for sure it's that you don't deserve what we've seen
Track Name: Come Home to Me
When you're lonely and you’re out on your own
And you need someone to call home
Don't ya understand I'ma be your man
If you come to me, come home to me
I'll be waiting while you're gone for you to come to me, come home to me
When you're searching with nowhere to look
and you've gone through every last book
Baby you don't need something you can read
But if you come to me, come home to me
I can give you what you want if you come to me, come home to me

You ain't never gonna have to worry cause I'll be right there by your side
But it wouldn't hurt you to hurry and start making up your mind

When your worries have worn your face
So you bring two full bags of just in case
Baby don't you see what you could be
If you come to me, come home to me
I'll be leaving my light on
When your troubles knock at your door
And you'd answer if you could get up off the floor
But you'll be ok you're gonna find a way
If you come to me, come home to me
I can keep you safe and warm
If you come to me, come home to me
Don’t you know I’ll be faithful cause I got no place else to go
And I swear you’d be grateful but it wouldn’t kill you to show
When you're losing more than you win
And you're better than what you've been
But who's keeping score you got a lot in store
If you come to me, come home to me
You’ll be right where you belong
If you come to me, come home to me
Come along baby now
Track Name: Sing to Survive
I ain't singing to pass the time
I ain't singing cause I'm caught on a line
All I know is I sing to survive

Some songs will be quiet and others won't let you sleep
Some will speak like a hammer and make your ears ring for a week
Some songs will pass judgments and yell things that you'd never say
And others speak for you when you've lost your voice for days
Some songs will be reckless and some will be tucked in their place
Others are righteous and unable to take up space
Some songs will keep moving even when you hang on tight
Others will find you when you let em out of your sights then you know

I ain't singing to pass the time
I ain't singing cause I'm caught on a line
All I know is I sing to survive

Some songs will be truthful and others you will sing through your teeth
And some will condemn you and leave you beaten out on the street
Some songs will give comfort and carry you up to the sun
While others will ground you and show you're not the only one
Some songs will take notice of a life that's been buried away
And some will find deathliness on the very bed where you lay
Some songs will give warning and tell what's next to come
While others accept you leave you there to beat on your drum then you know

I ain't singing to pass the time
I ain't singing cause I'm caught on a line
All I know is I sing to survive

You think I do this for my health well you're right
All I wanna do is stay alive

I ain't singing to pass the time
I ain't singing cause I'm caught on a line
All I know is I sing to survive
That’s all I ever knew about it
I’ll go to the roof and shout it
There’s nothing I can do about it
I sing to survive
